Pat and Charlene’s Lakewood Ranch Home

Charlene drew from her childhood memories of growing up in Florida, seeking accents that were authentic to Florida. Coastal influences such as shellstone on the exterior flow through to the interiors. Wainscoting and ample white trim and molding were used to keep the home bright and cheerful. The color palette of blues, aquas, and greens are highlighted against the white background. Artwork such as the antique stamp prints over the master bed, personal accents, and dramatic statements with paint all fuse to give the home a classic yet welcoming feel. Details used in the bonus room include two different kinds of carpet woven together to create the exact unique blend to capture the desired aesthetic appeal.

Pat and Charlene’s Lakewood Ranch Home
Iowa House

Once a shingle-sided shanty built in the early 1900s, the cottage was renovated in the mid-30s. Des Moines architect Amos Emery had transformed the boxy vacation home into a period icon. A two-story addition incorporated sleek curves and nautical motifs inspired by that era‘s streamlined trains, planes and ocean liners. Notably, the living area’s half-circle window wall projected like a ship’s prow toward the lake. The waterfront location, quirky architecture and native-granite fireplace wooed the family. Charlene began adding her personal touch of light and livability, while preserving and enhancing what was already there. “We have the smallest house around, but that’s fine,” Charlene says. “I didn’t want a big place to take care of. And I didn’t want us to forget that we were in a summer cottage.” Updates outside included new siding, roofing and a gabled entry. Inside, rooms were gutted and reconfigured. One thing lacking in this vacation retreat was an outdoor living area. The remedy: A sliding glass door now leads onto a stone patio overlooking the lake. Color choices were easy. “I wanted the spaces bright, informal and carefree,” Charlene adds. Sunny yellows, spice tones and neutrals dominate the light-drenched living area, reds warm the breakfast nook, and soft blues complement the sleeping rooms. Surprisingly, the split-rattan sofa, custom-designed and built in the 30s to match the radius of the curved window wall, withstood the test of time. “I only had to recover the cushions,” Charlene says. Another original—the stone stairway, with its hefty peeled-pine, pierlike posts and rope-and-shackle railing—weathered time as well. Charlene also retained the huge, arched fireplace and native red granite hearth. She merely topped them with a simple pine mantel stained to complement the rock’s earthy hues. Salting warm wood tones throughout, Charlene paired well chosen new pieces with pine antiques for a look she calls “country cottage.” “Pine is informal, and it goes with everything,” she explains. “It doesn’t require much care, plus it’s handsome and sturdy.” In her son’s room, white beadboard wainscot and hardwood floors balance a ceiling of puffy-white clouds. Set against a sky-blue background the decor makes the tiny space seem more expansive. An old Iowa State Fair pennant reminds Michael of a favorite Midwest tradition—a trip to the fair with his mom and dad.
