It’s officially Spring and for most, that means a surge of energy as the natural world around us renews and energetically gets dressed up for the season!
Our Springtime routine for our home should be just as energetically inspired as we prepare for the sultry days of Summer.
Spring cleaning can be a task that we chip away at for the season which in that case just make a list of all of your rooms and get started.
However, have you ever tried a true Spring Cleaning? This is where you use the entire weekend to turn your home inside out, clean every surface, organize all of your items and get rid of the excessive weight of clutter?
There’s nothing more satisfying than a weekend Spring Cleaning blitz that leaves you with a perfectly cleaned home free of clutter and unwanted, unneeded things, leaving you with a renewed commitment to keeping your home in order.
If you’ve never done it you should try it! The reason such a project is highly recommended is that it just feels so good! And a huge bonus is you don’t have a dozen big “project weekends” ahead of you. You can truly go to the beach with an empty to-do list knowing your home is clean, organized, and there’s nothing to do but enjoy it!
Get inspired by your home again
Let’s get cleaning! As a general rule of thumb start at the top story of your home or the farthest room from the front door and work your way out of the house. Cleaning each room from top to bottom, from dry to wet, going inside of each drawer, cabinet, and closet to clean and organize these. Generally by purging the items that we haven’t used in a year or that we don’t find to be beautiful or useful. Have three bags or bins follow you through the house:
- Donate
- Garbage
- Find a space for homeless items
To eliminate dust in one step I personally love to vacuum as much as possible including detailed furniture, drapes, lampshades, edges of the room, and upholstery.
Get a Fresh Perspective
Look at your home with a fresh perspective and get inspired by your imagination! To encourage the tone of your home to be one of love and hominess look at the details that make a house a home:
- Clean sheets and towels
- Fresh flowers
- Orderly rooms that signal you to relax after a long day
- Details that reflect the way you want to live.
For me, this always includes:
- Lighting
- Music
- A cozy throw at each landing spot
- A small table within reach to hold a book and a beverage.
This practice may even reveal design needs that you hadn’t thought of before, or open a dialogue with your family that may reveal the things that are not working.
