A third of our lives will be spent in our beds refreshing, rebooting and renewing for the next day. It’s really important that our rest is restorative since our sleep will affect our performance both mentally and physically.
I challenge you to consider your bedroom to see if it’s a sanctuary designed to help you to get the best rest possible. And, is it pretty?
Here’s some foundational things to consider:
YOUR BED
A headboard with height will become the focal point of your room. So, choose a color and a fabric you love.
MATTRESS
How old is your mattress? You may think. “Oh, it’s not that old and it looks pristine!” However, a quick look at your records may reveal shockingly that it’s already 10, 15 or more years old. A mattress should be replaced every 7-10 years depending on its use and care. The quality of your sleep may be the best indicator that it’s time for a new mattress.
Remember, you’re spending a third of your life in your bed. So, quality is important.
COLOR
Now, let’s talk about the color of your bedroom. The paint color, the fabrics, and accents.
Science tells us that the colors we use to surround ourselves with can affect our mood, energy, and health. And perhaps the color we chose when we bought our last mattress may be in for an update considering your present lifestyle.
ELEMENTS
Start with a rug to anchor the bed in the space.
Our bed needs foundational pieces that will give structure and a finished look. You’ll need the following items:
- Mattress topper
- Mattress pad
- Bed skirt
- Fitted and flat sheets
- Blanket
- Duvet
- Pillow cases
- Shams
- An accent pillow
Layering your materials (cotton, linen, printed, woven) will give your bed texture and depth. And then of course, lighting and artwork finishes the look.
If you’re in need of a get-away, look no further than your own well designed bedroom.
